Basics of smart poles and base station masts
Orbis Oy is developing new cabling and connectivity solutions for the 5G mobile network and smart cities. The ongoing pilot projects focus on smart poles that are significantly different from the traditional base station masts.
In this article, we try to summarize the most important things to remember when talking about smart poles.

Orbis cabling and integration expertise is key for smart pole functionalities
LuxTurrim5G ecosystem is developing its smart pole concept towards commercialization within two years. The joint effort of several companies and research institutions is proceeding well, and in May 2020 a pilot route of 15 smart poles will be completed in Kera, Espoo. Orbis Oy is responsible for the cabling, connections and assembly of the poles, which means active spring for the Orbis crew.

Business cooperation produces smart pole
Orbis Oy, together with DNA Oyj and Tehomet Oy, has built a smart pole in the Hiedanranta district in Tampere, Finland. The pilot project combined the expertise of all three companies and provided valuable experience for developing new smart city solutions.
Nokia driven LuxTurrim5G smart city ecosystem extending
Orbis is selected to the LuxTurrim5G+ project
LuxTurrim5G is a Nokia Bell Labs driven ecosystem project, which started in 2017. It develops and demonstrates a fast 5G network based on smart light poles with other devices. Now this project continues to second phase, consisting of two highly interlinked projects: LuxTurrim5G+ and Neutral Host Pilot.
Smart pole pilot in Tampere
Hiedanranta is a future district of Tampere city in Finland, where new ideas, experiments and urban culture will flourish. Sustainable and intelligent solutions will make life easier for the future 25 000 residents and 10 000 employees of the area. During the summer 2019, in cooperation with Tehomet Oy and DNA Oyj, Orbis Oy will participate in a Smart Pole pilot project in Hiedanranta.

We are living in fast changing times, moving towards the digital world. The role of data transmission becomes crucial when entire factories are being automated using robotics and artificial intelligence, doctors are performing surgeries remotely and self-driving cars populate the roads.
5G technology has been developed to meet the new data transmission requirements, including capacity, reliability, information security and low latency (delay).
What kind of 5G base station is in a light pole?
The coming 5G mobile network technology promises faster transmission of larger data volumes and with lower latency times.
